Stick to templates without the Pro indicator and your exports will be clean.

YouTube Studio

YouTube Studio generates and displays captions directly on the YouTube player, with no watermarks at any tier because you are not exporting a new video file. The captions are rendered by the player in real time. If you download the auto-generated subtitle file (available as SRT), the file itself is just text with timestamps, no watermark is possible on a text file.

If you want to use YouTube Studio's transcription for a video on another platform, upload the video as unlisted on YouTube, let the captions generate (this can take a few minutes to a few hours), download the SRT file, and import it into your preferred editor. The video on YouTube can be deleted afterward. This workaround gives you free, accurate, watermark-free subtitle files for any purpose.

HappyScribe (Trial)

HappyScribe's free trial provides a small number of transcription minutes (typically 10 minutes) with full export functionality and no watermark. The exported SRT, VTT, or other subtitle file formats are clean and identical to what paying customers receive. This is one of the few paid tools where the free tier does not degrade the output quality in any way.

The 10-minute limit means HappyScribe's free option is practical for testing or for occasional short videos, but not for sustained free use. If you find the accuracy meets your needs, the paid plans start at around $17 per month.

Subtitle Edit (Open Source)

Subtitle Edit is free, open-source software with no watermarks, no branding, and no restrictions on output. When paired with OpenAI's Whisper model for speech recognition, it produces subtitle files that you fully own and control. Since everything runs locally on your computer, there is no cloud service to impose watermarks or usage limits.

The tradeoff is setup complexity. You need to download and configure Whisper separately, and processing speed depends on your hardware. Once configured, however, the workflow is entirely free and private, with no data leaving your machine.

Kapwing (Free Plan, SRT Export)

Kapwing's free plan has a nuanced watermark policy. If you export the full video with burned-in captions, the free plan may limit resolution. However, if you export the subtitle file alone (SRT or VTT format), there is no watermark because a subtitle file is just text. This makes Kapwing useful as a free transcription tool even if you do your final video export elsewhere.

Tools That Add Watermarks on Free Tiers

VEED

VEED adds a visible watermark to all video exports on its free plan. The watermark is a small VEED logo that appears in the corner of the video. There is no way to remove it without upgrading to the Basic plan at $22 per month. SRT file exports are not watermarked, so you can use VEED's free tier for transcription and then import the subtitle file into another editor for watermark-free video export.

Zubtitle

Zubtitle limits free users to one video per month and adds a watermark to the exported video. The watermark is prominent enough to be distracting. Zubtitle's paid plans start at $16 per month, which removes the watermark and increases the video limit. For a tool focused primarily on subtitles, the free tier is too restricted to be practical for most users.

FlexClip

FlexClip includes auto-captioning in its video editor, but free-tier exports include a watermark and are limited to 480p resolution. The combination of low resolution and branding makes the free plan unsuitable for any published content. The caption styling options are decent, so FlexClip becomes viable at the paid tiers, but the free offering is primarily useful for testing.

The SRT Workaround

Even tools that watermark their video exports typically do not watermark subtitle file exports. SRT, VTT, and other subtitle formats are plain text files that contain words and timestamps, with no mechanism for embedding a visual watermark. This means you can use almost any tool's free tier for the transcription step, then export the subtitle file and import it into a different tool for the final video render.

The practical workflow looks like this: upload your video to the tool with the best accuracy (even if it watermarks video exports), edit and perfect the subtitle timing and text in that tool's editor, export the SRT file, then import the SRT into CapCut, a desktop editor like DaVinci Resolve (which is free), or any other tool that renders video without watermarks. This separates the transcription step from the rendering step, letting you use the best tool for each without paying for either.

DaVinci Resolve deserves special mention here because it is a professional-grade video editor available for free (the paid Studio version adds some features, but the free version handles subtitles well). It imports SRT files natively, lets you style captions with full control over font, color, size, and positioning, and exports at any resolution without watermarks. For creators who already edit in Resolve, adding AI-generated subtitles is a natural extension of the existing workflow.

Checking Before You Commit

Before spending time editing subtitles in any tool, verify its watermark policy by doing a quick test export. Upload a 30-second clip, generate captions, and export the video. Check for watermarks, branded intros, resolution limits, and any other restrictions. This five-minute test can save hours of wasted editing time.

Also check the tool's terms of service for any restrictions on commercial use. Some free tools allow personal use only and technically prohibit using the output in commercial content. While enforcement is rare, it is worth knowing the terms, especially if you create content for clients or employers.
